Sri Lanka wins opening game

Sri Lanka beat Bangladesh by 37 runs to score the first win of the Champions Trophy in their qualifying match in Mohali.

Sri Lanka batted first and scored 302-8 and in reply Bangladesh totaled 265-9.

Bangladesh went into the game hoping to repeat its victory over Sri Lanka from earlier in the year and when he won the toss Bangladesh captain Habibul Bashar looked to bowl first to make use of a grassy pitch.

However, his bowlers were unable to make any significant inroads as the partnership details showed.

Upul Tharanga, who went on to score 105, shared an opening stand of 67 with Sanath Jayasuriya (31), then 63 with Mahela Jayawardene (35), 63 with Kumar Sangakkara (22) and 51 with Marvan Atapattu (40).

Tharanga was dismissed, bowled by Mashrafe Mortaza in the 43rd over with Sri Lanka 244-4. Tillakaratne Dilshan was 26 not out as the lower-order cashed in on the good start to push the score to 302.

Mohammad Rafique was the only bowler to contain the Sri Lankans as he had 1-37 from his 10 overs.

Bangladesh was responding well at 78-2 but then lost two wickets in three balls to Farveez Maharoof and while it mounted a partial recovery through Saqibul Hasan, who hit 69 not out, the loss of wickets at regular intervals handicapped its hopes.

Maharoof finished with 3-47 from seven overs.
