Sri Lanka has secured the first Test against Bangladesh by eight wickets after easily reaching its victory target of 166 early on the fourth day in Chittagong.
The home side was bundled out for 181 on the third day, setting Sri Lanka an easy task for the win.
After resuming at 0-25, the visitors lost Upul Tharanga for 19 in the first over of the day. Tharanga was caught Shahriar Nafees off Syed Rasel (1-18).
Despite the early setback, Sri Lanka raced towards victory with Kumar Sangakkara smashing five fours and a six in his knock of 46. He eventually spooned a catch back to Enamul Haque (1-50) with the score on 115.
The fall of the second wicket didn't slow Sri Lanka, with Michael Vandort bringing up a deserved half century, before going onto 64 not out. Mahela Jayawardene added 26 at better than a run a ball as the visitors reached the target in less than 37 overs.
Jayawardene, who captained Sri Lanka in the Test, said Bangladesh was showing signs of improvement and he believed the decision-making of the batsmen was vastly improved.
"Bangladesh pushed us hard here and forced the team to show a lot of character to win," he said.
Sri Lanka was forced to be patient when attempting to bowl out the home team in its second innings.
The second Test starts in Bogra on Tuesday.
