Sri Lanka topples WI

A scintillating bowling display from Farveez Maharoof has guided Sri Lanka to a nine wicket victory over the West Indies in the final Champions Trophy qualifier.

Earlier in the match, veteran opener Chaminda Vaas got Sri Lanka off to a roaring start with two quick wickets.

However, it was Maharoof, who was the star of the show, the speedster taking 6-14 as the West Indies struggled to find any momentum.

Batting first and facing a Sri Lankan onslaught with the ball, the West Indies struggled from the outset before they eventually limped to 80 all out.

Despite toppling the West Indies for their second lowest score in a one-day international, Sri Lanka started its run-chase in the worst possible fashion when opener Upul Tharanga fell in the first ball of the innings.

However, Sanath Jayasuriya (45) and Mahela Jayawardene (34) steadied the ship to guide their country home with 37 overs to spare.

The result sees Sri Lanka qualify for Group B, which is made up of New Zealand, Pakistan and South Africa, while the Windies will square off against India, world champions Australia and England.
