A stunning century from Upal Tharanga has thwarted England's hopes of an early lead in the opening one day international against Sri Lanka at Lord's.
Fill-in England skipper Andrew Strauss sent the visitors into bat after winning the toss and was soon forced to regret his decision as they piled on 257-9 with relative ease.
Of more frustration for Strauss would have been the fact that his side conceded a whopping 42 extras from its 50 overs.
Following the resumption it was the Sri Lankans who took control early on to have the hosts were reeling on 66-4.
Marcus Trescothick and Jaimie Dalrymple provided the much-needed resistance, each contributing 67 runs.
However, it was not to be England's day as it finished its 50 overs well short of the target on 237-9.
