Sri Lanka storms home

Sri Lanka looks to have secured a place in the forthcoming Champions Trophy after crushing a woeful Zimbabwe side by 144 runs.

Upal Tharanga paved the way for the Sri Lankans with a classy 110, his second century is as many games, as the Asian nation dominated the inexperienced Zimbabwean bowlers.

Kumar Sangakkara was also in deadly form as he scored a quick-fire 80 to help Sri Lanka to 285-7.

Zimbabwe, meanwhile, scarcely raised a whimper in anger as the Sri Lankan bowlers looked for easy wickets.

Lasith Malinga's clinical spell made runs hard to come by as he nabbed figures of 3-25.

However, it was not a solo effort and both Dilhara Fernando and Muttiah Muralitharan chipped in with two wickets apiece as Zimbabwe capitulated to be all out for 141.

Brendan Taylor (30) and Hamilton Masakadza (30) gave the Africans a sliver of hope with their brief stays at the crease.

But it was certainly a case of too little too late as a lack of both wickets and overs remaining put the total beyond reach.

If the West Indies beats Bangladesh later in the week, it and Sri Lanka will go through to the Champions Trophy as qualifiers.
