Southee to play in Plunket Shield opener

The Yahoo!NZ Northern Knights have named their first team of the 2011-12 summer and it includes two new caps and the notable inclusion of BLACKCAP fast bowler TimSouthee.

Southee, who is recovering from a knee injury that kept him out of the BLACKCAPS tour of Zimbabwe, has been cleared to play by NZC medical staff. It is hoped that he will get through the first two rounds of the Plunket Shield strongly enough to be ready to take on Australia in the upcoming test series.

The two new players to the side are both young players with exciting futures in the game. Mitchell Santner, a left arm orthodox spinner, has been named in the Knights twelve. Santner has been an outstanding young prospect over recent seasons and is another product of the Northern Districts, Craig's Academy, high performance system. Santner achieved significant success for Hamilton last season in Fergus Hickey competitions coupled with standout performances for ND A and Under 23 teams.

Former Canterbury Wizards player, Corey Anderson, has also been selected having been very impressive during the pre-season. Anderson’s career has been riddled with injuries and is only being considered as a batsman until at least January.

As previously announced, Brad Wilson will captain the Knights for the Plunket Shield.

The side goes into the match with plenty of cricket under their belt having had some goodlead in matches. The highlight of these matches was James Marshall’s 183 runs in a match last week.

Daniel Flynn and Bradley Scott were not considered due to injury.

The Yahoo!NZ Northern Knights begin the season with a first round Plunket Shield match in Whangarei against the Auckland Aces, starting on Monday 7th November.
