State Central Stags batsman Mathew Sinclair was elated after breaking Martin Crowe’s provincial record score today.
Sinclair posted an unbeaten 243 against State Otago Volts at Napier’s Nelson Park, eclipsing Crowe’s effort against the same opposition by one run.
“I was struggling to think of the words to describe it, but simply to knock off a record of the distinction of Martin Crowe’s was awesome,” said the right-hander.
“I was taking each run as it comes. Obviously, the emphasis was from a team perspective and hopefully we’ll get something from it.
“But if we don’t it will be always there in the record books.”
Stags coaching director Scott Briasco opened the batting for CD when Crowe struck his then-record knock in January 1990, and was present when Sinclair set a new benchmark.
“I’ve got great respect for anyone who gets over 200 just for the concentration and the ability required to get there.
“I wouldn’t want to compare them, as they’re different players, and it’s obviously a different era.
“In terms of Mathew’s innings, his concentration and shot selection were excellent. He came in and made it look easy when we were at 57 for four and the wicket was doing a bit.
“But they’re both great players and I'm the privileged one to have worked with them both.”
