SA battles to draw with England

South Australia openers Daniel Harris and Matthew Elliott made solid contributions in the Redbacks' second innings as their three-day tour match against England ended in a draw.

The pair put on 94 for the first wicket before Elliott was caught off the bowling of spin sensation Monty Panesar for 55. Harris went on to make 71 and remained not out alongside Callum Ferguson (7) as the home side made 2-164.

The English attack was put through their paces in the afternoon session, but made just two breakthroughs in 46 overs against some stubborn batting.

James Anderson was economical going for just 26 runs off his 10 overs with three maidens and Panesar took 1-34 off 13.

Matthew Hoggard bowled nine overs for 32 runs and Sajid Mahmood was expensive, his five overs costing 29 runs.

Steve Harmison's chances of playing in the first Ashes Test were given a significant boost with the recovering paceman deemed fit enough to field during the afternoon.

The tourists showed fine form with the bat and were dismissed for 415, in reply to South Australia's declared total of 7-247, just before lunch on the final day with Flintoff making a patient 47 and Mahmood blasting 41 off 46 balls.

Wicket-keeper Ian Bell top-scored for England with a superb knock of 132 on the second day which included 12 boundaries and a six.

But in the end the visitors were denied by tenacious South Australian batting and a placid pitch which offered very little assistance to the bowlers.
