Central Districts coach Dermot Reeve has been censured and fined for his remarks, reported in news media last month, which alleged ball-tampering by Auckland Aces player Ravi Bopara.
New Zealand Cricket Chief Executive Justin Vaughan initiated a Code of Conduct hearing to determine whether the comments made by Reeve, as reported on 22 December, were prejudicial to the game in New Zealand or brought the game into disrepute.
In a hearing this week, Commissioner Roger Mori determined that Reeve’s comments constituted a breach of the Code of Conduct.
The Commissioner noted that Reeve’s actions were not malicious and were motivated by a desire to prevent ball-tampering in future cricket matches; however his action in involving the news media was misguided and inappropriate.
He ruled that Reeve be censured for his remarks, and fined the sum of $750.00.
Justin Vaughan said he was pleased that the matter had now been determined.
As the finding is still potentially subject to appeal, no further comment will be made.
