The BLACKCAPS are jet setting their way to Brisbane this weekend to start their training camp before the Twenty20 World Cup in the West Indies.
Blackcaps.co.nz caught up with debutant Rob Nicol to discuss his selection in the international side.
You’ve been rather impressive on the domestic scene especially in the shortest format, scoring 237 and taking eight wickets for the Canterbury Wizards, what do you put that success down to?
I’ve been putting a lot of perspective on my sport as a whole and enjoying it more. That was my main focus. I’ve got no fear. I was interested in having heaps of fun and not taking myself too seriously. I think that’s the main reason I’ve been successful. I’m enjoying the environment in Canterbury. I’m surrounded by a great group of lads and some good people in the support crew.

You’ve been playing domestic cricket for nine years, first for Auckland before making the move down south this season, did you think time had come and gone regarding international selection and was it a surprise to be called up for the ICC World Twenty20?
I’m only 26 and I think that’s coming of age regarding your game. I’ve figured out the game and basically the change of scenery got me going. In terms of selection you’re always feel positive, you always want to play for New Zealand. You’ve just got to wait for your time.
What was your reaction when you heard the news that you had been selected for the BLACKCAPS?
Obviously you’re always surprised! It’s like being a kid again and waiting to know whether you’ve been selected for your rep team. It was the same feeling being selected for the 30 man squad; quite bizarre thinking you might have a chance. And then getting the call up, it was pretty awesome. I had to keep it quiet but I was able to tell Mum and Dad. Everyone was so happy. Mum’s still on fire, she’s loving it and Dad, my bro and sisters were pretty happy too. I’m stoked to be selected.
How are you going to adapt your skills for international cricket?
Skills wise I don’t think I want to change anything really. I want to pit my skills against the best in the world. If you do start changing things you’re putting yourself in a pressure situation. I’ll try to do what I’ve done all along and keep working on those things.
What preparations have you been doing for the next step up?
I’ve relocated back to Auckland from Christchurch and have been catching up with family and friends. In terms of the end of the season it’s bit of a strange, this is a first for me. I’ve had some down-time and am trying to relax mentally before the training camp in Brisbane next week.
What are you hoping to achieve personally from the tour?
I’m just really happy to be involved in the BLACKCAPS environment. There are some pretty amazing players that I’ve watched for most of my career who I’ve come through the ranks with. I’m just going to get immersed in it and I’m absolutely amping to be there.
