Ponting guides Australia to warm up win over BLACKCAPS

Australian captain Ricky Ponting guided his team to a seven wicket win over the BLACKCAPS in the ICC World Cup warm up match at Kennington Oval.

The BLACKCAPS got of to terrible start after winning the toss and electing to bat, losing Brendon McCullum and Jesse Ryder in consecutive overs.

Martin Guptill then holed out to see the BLACKCAPS slump to six for three.

Ross Taylor (14) looked to take charge hitting three boundaries in a row but found Ricky Ponting at mid-off when attempting his fourth.

Further pain was inflicted when Jacob Oram was run-out without facing ball but the Scott Styris and Peter McGlashan steadied the innings with a 71 run partnership for the seventh wicket.

Styris struck 42 off 28 including two massive sixes, one off Peter Siddle that went several rows beyond the longest boundary.

McGlashan has put his hand up for the No. 7 position after lashing 49 off 35 and ensuring the BLACKCAPS reached a defendable target of 147.

Talking after the match McGlashan said, “It was nice to take the opportunity and it was one of those situations where we had nothing to lose we were in a fairly precarious position so to do well and take advantage of that was nice.”

Mitchell Johnson was the pick of the Australian attack taking four for 20 off his four overs.

A double wicket maiden by James Franklin ensured the Australian openers were back in the pavilion early but Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke combined to take the game away from the BLACKCAPS.

Ponting hit 56 off 40, orchestrating the well paced run chase with Clarke contributing an unbeaten 49 off 38 and Andrew Symonds hitting the winning runs in the final over.

Franklin ended with two for 27 with Daniel Vettori taking one for 28.
