Pakistan chairman resigns

Pakistan Cricket's chairman Shaharyar Khan has resigned.

He made the move after Younis Khan refused to stand in as captain for Inzamam-ul-Haq, who is serving a four-match ban after the Oval cricket affair.

Khan told the BBC that he had been hurt by recent events including the Oval Test and the captaincy refusal by Khan.

"I thought this is the right time to step down and pass the responsibility to someone else. The Younis Khan episode has hurt me more than the Oval fiasco."

Khan, 72,who has been a lifelong diplomat, has held office since 2003 and is a nephew and cousin of the two Nawabs of Pataudi who each captained India.

Younis Khan refused the job when saying he didn't want to be a 'dummy captain.'

Shaharyar Khan, whose board was criticised for its handling of the situation around the Oval Test said: "I don't think the Oval incident should happened.

"But once it did we had to take a stand and back our players."

The board was also criticised for removing team manager Zaheer Abbas after the Oval Test.

There has also been rumour that three or four players in the Pakistan side were unwilling to play under Younis Khan.

Meanwhile, Younis said he has been offered the captaincy of Yorkshire for the 2007 season.

However, the club told BBC Sport that it was in discussion with several players and it hoped to make an announcement next week.
