Christchurch’s Old Boys-Collegians were crowned National Club Champions today at Cornwall Park, comfortably winning the final by eight wickets against New Plymouth Marist United.
An all-round team effort with the ball limited Marist United to 181 for nine from their 50 overs, with Matt Sim top-scoring with 34. In reply Old Boys Collegian always looked comfortable, with Todd Astle (87*) and captain Joel Abraham (37*) calmly seeing their team to victory after 42.2 overs
In the playoff for the third and fourth, Eastern Suburbs recorded the highest total of the tournament when they made 406 for nine in their first innings against Kairorai. Doing the majority of the damage were openers Ben Orton and Jeremy Dean. The pair put on an explosive 207 for the first wicket, with their partnership coming off just 17.5 overs. Dean made 117 off 66 balls, including 19 fours and two sixes, while Orton made 87 form 47 deliveries with seven fours and six sixes. Kairorai required something special to have any chance, but were unable to challenge the 400 plus score and were dismissed after 22.1 overs. Ricky Joseph was the pick of the bowlers with figures of five for 48 from ten overs.
In the other match, Parnell wrapped up fifth place after defending their total of 325 against Kaipara Flats. Opener Ben Horne scored a century off 95 balls to lead the Auckland side’s charge, while Kirk Bunting and Angus McLean both brought up half-centuries. Kaipara Flats batting line-up failed to fire and were all out after 30.1 overs.
