North Otago snatch Hawke Cup

North Otago has beaten Manawatu by 159 runs at Fitzherbert Park in the last Hawke Cup Challenge match of the summer.

The result was looking unlikely earlier in the match with North Otago crumbling to 116 for nine in their first innings but a remarkable 91 run stand for the last wicket between Duncan Drew (102) and David Sewell (37*) rescued their team and pushed the total through to 207.

First innings points are vital in Hawke Cup fixtures and when Manawatu were bundled out for 159 momentum was well and truly with the challengers.

Darren Broom crafted a superb 133 in North Otago’s second innings leaving Manawatu the stiff challenge of chasing down 311 to win but only managed 151, handing the Hawke Cup to the southerners.
