North Island women take trophy after back to back wins

The North Island women have won the North/South trophy after two Twenty20 wins over their Southern neighbours.

The three match series is part of a women’s cricket training camp with the ICC World Twenty20 squad selected at the end of the series.

Match 2: Twenty20

Toss: North Island won the toss and elected to batted
Result: North Island won by 24 runs

North Island 162/7 (Liz Perry 52, Sara McGlashan 24, Nicola Browne 47; Sarah Tsukigawa 2/17, Erin Bermingham 2/31) beat South Island 138/5(Suzie Bates 53, Amber Boyce 28, Megan Kane 20*, Abby Burrows 3/22)

The North Island start was a carbon copy of the earlier match with both openers out early and Sarah McGlashan getting the innings back on track.

When McGlashan went for 24 Liz Perry and Nicola Browne combined to put on 83 off just 57 deliveries for the fourth wickets.  Perry’s entertaining 52 included seven boundaries and used just 40 deliveries.  Browne’s contribution was 47.

With a solid platform in place Sophie Devine was able to play freely hitting 17 off nine balls to take the North Island total through to 162 for seven.

Sarah Tsukigawa was again the pick of the South Island bowling attack taking two for 17 with leg spinner Erin Bermingham picking up two for 31.

In reply, Suzie Bates and Amber Boyce got the South Island off to the perfect start with a 53 run opening stand.

The dismissal of Boyce for 28 didn’t deter Bates who went on to make 53 off 47 balls.

However, they lost a string for quick wickets in the middle overs and were unable to recover.  Megan Kane and Tsukigawa put on an unbeaten 35 run partnership for the sixth wicket but the damage was done earlier and they were unable to keep up with the run rate.

The 24 run win hands the series victory to the North Island with tomorrows match still to play.

Match 1: Twenty20

Toss: North Island won and elected to bowl
Result: North Island won by 5 wickets

South Island 143/6 (Frances Mackay 41, Amber Boyce 23, Sarah Tsukigawa 39; Sian Ruck 2/20, Kate Broadmore 2/25) lost to North Island 144/5 (Sara McGlashan 26, Sophie Devine 64, Sarah Tsukigawa; 2/26, Erin Bermingham 2/31) by 5 wickets

South Island opener Frankie Mackay got her team off to a flyer, racing to 16 with three boundaries and when on to provide the backbone of the innings with 41 off 53 deliveries.

Mackay was supported firstly by Amber Boyce who hit a brisk 23 and then she shared a 67 run partnership with Sarah Tsukigawa who as the next best batsmen with 39.

Left arm seamer Sian Ruck was stand out bowler for the North Island bowling attack with two for 20 with young Kate Broadmore chipping in with two for 25.

It was a shaky start to the North Island reply with Victoria Lind and Aimee Watkins going cheaply but Sarah McGlashan and Sophie Devine steadied the innings and then took the game away from the Southerners.

McGlashan hit a measured 26 off 29 deliveries while Devine blasted 64 off just 35 including seven boundaries and three sixes.

A 30 run partnership for the sixth wicket between Liz Perry and Rachel Priest sealed the five wicket win with four balls to spare.

Medium pacer Tsukigawa was the pick of the bowlers with two for 26 off her four overs.
