Nicol Secures Mitre10 MVP Title

Canterbury Wizards all-rounder Rob Nicol has been awarded the Mitre 10 MVP for the domestic One-Day competition.

Nicol finished at the top of the table with 161.10 points, well ahead of teammate and Wizards captain Peter Fulton with 104.02. The Mitre10 MVP ranking identifies and rewards players who are able to contribute to their team across each facet of the game. Nicol showed his value to the Wizards team by not only finishing atop the MVP batting points category (92.35 points), but also finishing a very close second to Mark Gillespie (62.45) in the bowling category with 60.65 points.

Nicol showed his class during the 50-over competition. He was the leading runs scorer with 648 runs, a top score of 119 and an average of 72. During the season he scored two hundreds and five half centuries. With the ball he was the third highest wicket taker in the competition claiming 15 wickets behind Mark Gillespie and Andre Adams.

Nicol also takes the honour of securing the most points per game, securing an average of 20.13 – a testament to his consistency during the competition.

Along with the trophy for the One-Day Mitre 10 MVP Nicol also secured $1500 in Mitre 10 vouchers.

Canterbury Cricket CEO Lee Germon said over the last two seasons Nicol has firmly secured his place as a leader within the Wizards side and is pleased Nicol has been able to take out the Mite 10 MVP award for the One-Day competition. ““Rob has showed his class this season and we are proud of his achievements. It’s fantastic that he has been recognised with the One-Day Mitre 10 MVP award,” Germon said. “He’s been a great asset to us this season and it is always positive to see him leading from the front with both bat and ball.

“We congratulate him on his successes this season and we know he can continue his good form through the Plunket Shield.”

In the Plunket Shield rankings Nicol is 22nd with 46.47 points. Otago Volts paceman Neil Wanger leads the pack with 130.87 points.

The Plunket Shield resumes today with the Northern Knights hosting the Central Stags in Whangarei, the Otago Volts at home against the Canterbury Wizards in Queenstown and the Auckland Aces play the Wellington Firebirds at the Basin Reserve.
