White Fern Emily Drumm has been made a Member of the Order of Merit in the New Year’s Honours List for services to cricket.
A prolific batter, Drumm captained the side to their World Cup success in 2000 at the Bert Sutcliffe Oval, Lincoln.
She recently joined State Northern Spirit after 15 years with State Auckland Hearts.
“I got a letter in the mail earlier this month and I kept it pretty quiet,” she told www.nzcricket.co.nz.
“I only told a couple of people. I didn’t even tell my parents – I wanted it to be a nice surprise for them when they turned on their radios. And it was!
“It came as a real surprise to me as I’m still playing. These awards are usually given to people who have been contributing to their community for a long time, or have stopped playing.
“It’s a come at a time when I’m always on the go with cricket, I’m all over the place. But I’ll make sure I will attend the function later in the year.”
Catherine Campbell, New Zealand Cricket's Women's Manager and a former White Ferns team-mate of Drumm's, said: “New Zealand Cricket is thrilled for Emily.
“She has made an outstanding contribution to women's cricket and the game as a whole in New Zealand and has a lot still to offer.”
It is not the first time Drumm has been commended for her contribution to the game, having received the Auckland Sportsperson of the Year award in 2001.
The investiture ceremony for the New Year’s Honours will be held at Auckland's Government House in March.
