Nerves got to us: Giles

England spinner Ashley Giles is confident his team can put a nervous and disappointing start to the Ashes Test series behind it and bounce back on day two at the Gabba.

It was Giles and not England captain Andrew Flintoff that addressed the media after the opening day's play which saw Australia dominate the visitors - with the exception of Flintoff- and the spinner admitted that nerves did get the better of the tourists.

"We were all pretty tense," Giles said. "The bus was a quiet place this morning and being the first day of an Ashes series you know you are going to be nervous."

"This has been the most hyped series of any and that adds extra pressure."

Despite the batting onslaught of the Australians and long day under the sun for the visitors, Giles thought his team battled hard.

"There are going to be tough days and you lose the toss on a wicket like that and it is going to be hard work," he said.

"But I thought we kept our heads up and stuck at it pretty well."

However, Giles stressed his team were a determined bunch and will be out to make amends when play resumes on Friday morning.

"I know this England team and on Friday they will come out buzzing and will be looking to pick up some early wickets," he said.

"This side does not lie down so we will be back in the morning and come out fighting."

The left-arm spinner was playing his first Test in almost a year and was overjoyed when he snuck into the side ahead of the popular Monty Panesar.

Giles' team-mates rushed him when he claimed the vital wicket of Damien Martyn for 29 when Paul Collingwood snapped up the catch at first slip.

"Just to get through on my first day back in Test cricket and to be back in the side is great," said the 33-year-old, admitting he too succumbed to nerves and was surprised his first delivery even 'bounced'.

"It was nice to get your name back on the board and was glad for the pats on the back."
