Myburgh picks up Player of the Year award for Canterbury

All Rounder, Johann Myburgh, has won the State Canterbury Wizards Player for the year for the 2008/09 season. After making significant contributions with not only the bat and the ball but also in the field, selecting the deserving recipient was obvious for coach Bob Carter.

The Club and Representative Awards evening for the was held on Tuesday 14th April at the Aurora Centre, Burnside High School. It was a fantastic evening and the perfect way to put the spotlight on some outstanding performances from Canterbury’s best.

The evening, hosted by Canterbury Crickets own Mike Harvey, celebrated achievements from teams at all levels of senior cricket.

Representative Awards:

Lion Breweries State Canterbury Wizards Personality of the Year: Shanan Stewart
Shanan’s demeanor on and off the field has earned him this title for the 2008/09 season. He can be used as the barometer for what spirits the side is in and to quote Bob Carter ‘he has truly blossomed this season’- although most would not associate Shanan with a blossom!

Cricket Express State Canterbury Wizards Fielder of the Year: Kruger van Wyk
Kruger had an outstanding season behind the stumps. Twenty-three dismissals in the State Championship, thirteen in the State Shield and seven in the State Twenty20 ensured he took the crown for fielding in the inaugural State MVP rankings as well.

Speight’s Ale House State Canterbury Wizards Bowler of the Year: Andrew Ellis
In the State Championship Andrew took twenty-three wickets at an average of twenty-three making him the third highest wicket taker in the competition. He was miserly and managed to break many crucial opposition partnerships.

Harcourts Vision State Canterbury Wizards Batsman of the Year: Johann Myburgh
Johann has had an extremely consistent season across all three competitions. He has featured among the top run scorers for each including three centuries and four fifties in the State Championship with a high score of 199.

Special mention also of Michael Papps, who this season broke the record for most first class centuries for Canterbury. He now has 15 which is three clear of second place Chris Harris.

State Canterbury Wizards Player of the Year: Johann Myburgh
In total Johann scored 1291 runs for the State Canterbury Wizards this season as well as making significant contributions with the ball and in the field taking 17 wickets and 9 catches. He has developed his all round game this season to a new level and we look forward to more great things from him next season.

Lion Breweries State Canterbury Magicians Personality of the Year: Michelle Mitchell
Michelle is the kind of player who can boost a team’s spirits during the disappointments and who can boost them even higher during the highs. It is because of this and her ‘exploits’ off the field that have earned her this title for 2008/09.

Cricket Express State Canterbury Magicians Fielder of the Year: Maria Fahey
Maria has returned to the Magicians side after a year off with illness. Her work in the inner circle resulted in added pressure on opposing teams and her arm always threatening to knock the stumps down.

Speight’s Ale House State Canterbury Magicians Bowler of the Year: Sarah Burke
Sarah has shown consistency in both the State League and State League Twenty20 competitions taking a total of 19 wickets for the season as well as having one of the top economy rates for the competition.

Harcourts Vision State Canterbury Magicians Batsman of the Year: Haidee Tiffen
The Magicians captain has lead the team again with the maturity we have come to expect from her. She produced numerous critical innings at stages when required and scored a total of 390 runs for her last season.

State Canterbury Magicians Player of the Year: Amy Sattertwaite
Amy was the top runs scorer for the State Canterbury Magicians in the State League as well as taking thirteen wickets.

Junior Batting trophy: Tom Latham
Tom is a young man with a great deal of promise. This season he made the New Zealand Under 19 side as well as the Canterbury ‘A’ side.

Junior Bowling Trophy: Matt Farrant
Matt was the captain of the Canterbury Under 19 side and played his way into the New Zealand Under 19 team where he took 23 wickets at an average of 10 during the tournament.

Special mention must also be made of the Canterbury Under 17 side, lead by Tom Latham, who took out the Under 17 competition in Napier. The team secured their winning position head and shoulders above the opposition with two more games to go.
