MILO Cup and Shield Finals 2006

A record entry list of 340 has been whittled down to just eight for the finals of the MILO Cup and Shield finals, to be held in Palmerston North on 19-20 December.

From 340 schools, the two competitions for year seven and eight students have found four finalists for each of the MILO Cup, for boys, and MILO Shield, for girls.

The national primary schools’ cricket tournaments are in their seventh year, and provide the opportunity for primary and intermediate schools to enter their first XIs to a high level of competition.

The finalists, including three new schools, have progressed through the six qualifying tournaments held by each Major Association.

The winner of each qualifier then plays off in an Inter-Zone match against its neighbour to reach the final. The fourth place in the finals goes to the Major Association with the most entries.

This year, Central Districts earned a guaranteed place in the MILO Cup, and Canterbury in the MILO Shield.

In both competitions, the winners from day one of the finals will meet on day two to determine the national champions, while the two losing teams playoff for third and fourth.

The strength of competition is such that neither of the defending champions will return to contend their trophies.

MILO Cup holders Cobham Intermediate missed out this time around, being defeated in the Canterbury regional final by Medbury Preparatory School.

Hawkes Bay’s Taradale College was crowned the 2005 MILO Shield champions, having defeated Otago’s Blue
Mountain College in Christchurch - but neither will be at Palmerston North this year.

New Zealand Cricket is most appreciative of MILO’s ongoing support for these foundation competitions.
