Magicians claim vital victory

Helen Watson’s half-century backed up Sarah Burke’s four-wicket haul to give State Canterbury Magicians a five-wicket victory over State Central Hinds at Palmerston North.

Watson struck an unbeaten 63, mostly in an 80-run partnership with Rowan Milburn, to help her side chase down the Hinds’ 213 for six.

White Ferns bowler Burke claimed four for 49 after the Hinds were sent to the crease first by visiting skipper Haidee Tiffen.

Sara McGlashan’s 58 was the leading individual score by the home batsmen, although Zara McWilliams (18not out) and Kelly Tunnicliffe (19no) put on useful unbroken stand of 41 at the end of the innings.

The Canterbury reply began strongly, with Watson and Milburn’s stand putting the Magicians in sight of victory, which was achieved with four balls to spare.
