Northern Knights all-rounder Kane Williamson was the clear winner of the 2009/10 Mitre 10 MVP for the One-Day Competition in just his third season playing on the domestic scene.
He was awarded the top prize, after he bagged five wickets and struck a half century to lead the Knights to victory over the Auckland Aces in the One-Day final at Colin Maiden Park.
Williamson topped the table with 201.95 points, almost twice as many as his nearest rival, Wizards batsman Michael Papps.
The nineteen year old raising star hit 621 runs in 11 matches with an average of 77.62. He stuck two centuries, with a top score of 108 not out. His spin bowling yielded 13 wickets, with an economy rate of 4.83. His best bowling figures were 5-51, the third best figures for the competition.
Tussle for top international Twenty20 MVP
Brendon McCullum is currently leading the international Twenty20 Mitre 10 MVP, but only just.
The wicket-keeper batsman is currently less than two points ahead of captain Daniel Vettori on the table, and with only two international Twenty20s against the Australians to go, the title could easily go either way.
McCullum was able to post 56* against the Bangladeshis, which helped propel him to the number one spot and he’ll be looking for some more form against the touring Australians to snatch the title.
“We definitely take note of the MVP rankings. Its nice to know that you can see where you are at relative to your peers. I think the way the way the MVP is judged now is a great indication where your overall game is. Because it measures your contribution across the board you have to raise your game in all areas, you have to perform.”
“In the team you know who the big all-round contributers are. The MVP is a really good way to quantify that and show the wider public just how much people contribute in some areas.”
Plunket Shield returns
Now the shorter form competitions have concluded, the spotlight is now back on the four-day game.
Central Stags pace bowler Ewen Thompson currently leads the overall Plunket Shield Mitre 10 MVP. He i is the leading wicket taker with 22 scalps. with best figures of 5 for122 coming against the Otago Volts. Thompson has also contributed with the bat, hitting 129 runs, with a top score of 41 and an average of 18.42.
Thompson’s new ball bowling partner Michael Mason is sitting in second spot on the Plunket Shield Mitre 10 MVP, only eight points adrift of top spot.
