Joyce to replace Trescothick

Middlesex batsman Ed Joyce will replace Marcus Trescothick in England's Ashes squad currently touring Australia after receiving the nod from the England and Wales Cricket Board.

The 28-year-old left-hander is yet to make his Test debut and was part of England's 14-strong Academy squad that was due to depart for a five-week training camp in Perth on Wednesday.

Joyce is not a straight swap for Trescothick at the top of the batting order, but England chairman of selectors David Graveney said there were already options within the current squad to partner with Andrew Strauss.

"As we already have other players in the squad who have experience of opening the innings we have decided to choose a replacement who will be able to cover a number of different positions within the order," Graveney said.

"Ed is a highly promising player who has performed well for Middlesex this season and I am sure he will be delighted to be part of an Ashes squad."

Trescothick left the touring party - flying out of Sydney International Airport on Tuesday - after a recurrence of a stress-related illness that also affected him during England's tour of India earlier this year.

Dublin-born Joyce beat out more experienced Academy batsmen Robert Key and Owais Shah - who have both played Test cricket for their country - for the coveted call-up.

The middle-order batsman scored 1077 runs in 11 matches for Middlesex in this year's English domestic competition at an average of 56.68, including a high score of 211 with three centuries and five fifties.

He made his one-day international debut for England against Ireland in June and was part of England's 14-man squad for the ICC Champion's Trophy, but he did not play a game.

The England team flew into Adelaide on Wednesday to take on South Australia in a tour match with Joyce set to join his new team-mates there on Friday.
