Former Sri Lankan skipper Sanath Jayasuriya looks likely to mark his Test return for his nation in the upcoming third match against England at Trent Bridge after he was named in the preliminary 12-man squad.
The prolific run-scorer, who has played 102 Tests for Sri Lanka, retired from the five-day form of the game in April.
However, he was persuaded to join the squad for the England tour by new chief selector Asantha de Mel, but didn't play in the second Test defeat at Edgbaston.
Sri Lanka skipper Mahela Jayawardene told the BBC that Jayasuriya had a "very good chance" of playing at Trent Bridge.
"He hasn't played Test cricket for quite some time so it's a tough call for him," he said.
"But he's played 100-odd Test matches and that should count for something.
"He's looking forward to the challenge. Plus, he gives us a different variation with his left-arm spinners if it starts turning on the fourth or fifth day."
Jayawardene added that Jayasuriya would bat in the middle order and not in his favoured opening position.
Sri Lanka has dropped batsman Thilan Samaraweera, who is averaging less than five for the series, and fast bowler Nuwan Kulasekara from the side that lost the second Test by six wickets.
