INTERVIEW: Daniel Vettori before the match against South Africa

 Daniel Vettori
The BLACKCAPS captain talks before the second World Twenty20 match against South Africa.

On the match against Scotland…

“I suppose we saw two sides of the team. I don’t think we cope with pressure that well with the ball, because it was a pressure situation.  Seven overs against a team we’re supposed to beat - that really put it to us. They played exceptionally well and we bowled exceptionally poorly and then the flip side of that was the calmness of how we went about our chase; to do it in just under six overs and chase 90 is ridiculous really! I was really happy with that, so there are some good things and bad things that came out of the game. “

On the Twenty20 game plan…

“Yeah its pretty simple, most teams will have good plans it’s just the team that can step up and execute them on the day - that’s what we’ve been preaching to our bowlers for a long time now. The team that executes the best will win the most Twenty20 games. We didn’t really handle it all that well and probably reverted back to things we didn’t want to do in tight situations. It’s been talked about long and hard and we’re just hoping we can remedy it in the next game.”

On playing South Africa…

“I think we treat it as another game. I think South Africa has got a really good team and it’s a chance to test ourselves against them. We haven’t got the best record against South Africa so any opportunity we get to play against them we want to try and go out there and win and so the we’re going to put the best team out on the park.”

On the BLACKCAPS approach…

“Consistency is what most teams want and you can probably scrape through here or there with a win loss scenario but once you get to those big games in the semi finals you’ve got to be ready to win on the day. You can almost treat tomorrow as that. It would have been a sudden death game if we’d been rained off [against Scotland], so we want to take some of that intensity into it and not just say its another warm up game regardless of the result because I think we’ve seen that have a detrimental effect on campaigns in the past. “

The BLACKCAPS play South Africa at Lord’s on 9th June (UK time),
