INTERVIEW: Andy Moles before the first World Cup match

 Andy Moles
The BLACKCAPS coach talks about the playing Scotland, being the "dark horses" and their chances of winning the tournament.

On playing Scotland – a team he coached...

"I had 12 months with them. It’s quite strange how things turn around and we end up playing them first game.  I’ve already seen a lot of the Scottish lads when we were at Wormsley in practice; we had a very amiable chat. They’re looking forward to the competition and I’m looking forward that hopefully we can dispose of them."

On the risk of playing a lesser known side first-up...

"It’s a potential banana skin isn’t it.  You know 99 times out of 100 you’ll win. But especially in the shorter form of the game it just takes one or two of the Scottish players to have a good day and perhaps one or two bad overs at the wrong time and it can change a game. So it is a little bit nerve-wracking, but as long as we stick to our game plans and show belief and go out with confidence then I’m sure the right result will come."

On the BLACKCAPS’ confidence...

"If we play well and we execute our own skills then we’ll be too good. If we go out and be a bit apprehensive and don’t play to the best of our skills then that brings Scotland into the game. They’ve got one or two dangerous players but if we play well and we just concentrate on doing our thing right, we’ve got some destructive batters and if two or three of those play anywhere near their normal game that should be good enough for us to get across the line."

On the BLACKCAPS role as competition “dark horses”...

"We’ve got as good a chance of winning this competition as anybody else. We’ve got destructive players and two good overs here or two bad overs there and any side in the competition can win. And I believe that the make up of our side is such that if we play well under pressure we can beat any side in the world. We’re going to play with confidence and express ourselves and we’re really looking forward to the challenge.

We’re not going to go out and make statements that we’re going to win it but we’re certainly one of the sides that can win it. The other sides will respect us, we’ve prepared really well and if we play good cricket there’s no reason why we can’t go all the way."
