INTERVIEW: Aimee Watkins after the first match against Australia

 Aimee Watkins
We catch up with White Ferns captain Aimee Watkins after their first ICC World Twenty20 match against Australia in England.

How would you assess today’s performance?

"It was great to put together a complete effort.  The opening spells from Sophie Devine and Sian Ruck were excellent.  They both denied runs and Ruck knocked the top off the Australians with a winning player of the match performance with 3/12 off 4 overs. We then batted positively and we were always ahead of the required run rate."

To win by 9 wickets with 22 balls to spare was comprehensive – did it feel so convincing?

"We always felt the wicket was worth about 150 runs so even though Australia recovered well after a poor start we felt that if we batted sensibly we could reach the target."

You must be pleased with your contribution to the batting?

"Yes, you got good value for your shots and Suzie and I enjoyed our partnership and I loved batting with freedom which is something we are all keen to do so today was my day."

Looking ahead to the West Indies how will the team approach that match tomorrow?

"We need another good win to keep building our momentum.  There are no easy matches in T20 cricket so we will need to forget about today’s win and start again by keeping clear heads and executing our plans."
