India A take first One Day match

In response to New Zealand’s 257 all out in the first innings, India’s opening pair of Robin Uthappa (113) and Unmukt Chand (94) put on 178 for the first wicket to help lead their team to victory after 44.1 overs.

Having won the toss and opted to bat, New Zealand’s top order made a solid start, but couldn’t take advantage of their strong position. Anton Devcich (48), Carl Cachopa (45) and Tom Latham (37) all made starts to take New Zealand through to 135 for two, but failed to progress on to big scores.

Following a mid-order collapse which left them at 183 for seven, Daryl Mitchell (51) and Ish Sodhi (29) produced a 70-run eight wicket partnership to give New Zealand a competitive total. Mitchell was dismissed with two balls remaining in the 50 overs to end the innings.

India looked comfortable in their pursuit and were aggressive against the New Zealand bowlers early. Uthappa (5) and Chand (6) struck 11 sixes between them, before Chand was dismissed by Adam Milne half a dozen short of his century.

Milne struck twice more and Devcich captured the wicket of Uthappa to make some late inroads into the Indian batting line-up, but the home side’s victory was never really in question.

Aditya Tare (37 not out) and Kedhar Jadhav (15 not out) saw out the final runs to give India a one-nil lead in the three match series.

Adam Milne finished with figures of three for 43 from ten overs.

The next match is to be played on Tuesday at 9:00am local time (3:30pm NZ time).
