Havelock North High School has won the New Zealand Community Trust Secondary School Girls’ Cricket Finals by the closest of margins at Manawaroa Park in New Plymouth.
Having trailed Palmerston North Girls’ High School via net run-rate at the start of the day, Havelock North proceeded to overtake them with a huge win in the final match of the tournament. It took them to a NRR of 2.167, marginally ahead of Palmerston North’s 1.690.
St Hilda’s Collegiate could have been in the running as well, but were upset in the seventh round by Wellington Girls’ College. St Hilda’s though still managed to come third, edging out St Kentigern College for the podium finish.
General Manager of Cricket Development at NZC Mark Lane said of the tournament: “The quality of players and standard of cricket at this year’s tournament was better than ever before and puts women’s cricket in New Zealand in great stead for the future.”
