Did you ever want to touch the grass where Daniel Vettori celebrated his 100th Test? Or walk on the turf where cricket’s best and brightest stars have walked?
Well now is your chance to do so because the hallowed turf at Seddon Park is on sale and can be all yours.
The outfield at the picturesque park is being dug up and offered to the public. 15,000 square metres of the luscious Rye grass will be available at $4 a square metre and Seddon Turf Manager Karl Johnson said there has already been a lot of interest. “We’ve had some well known cricketers play on this turf over the last couple of season and for cricket fans the grass really is a piece of history,” he said.
The sale of the turf started over the weekend and runs until May 9. Johnson said if you want some turf just turn up to the park and the groundsmen will help you out. “We have rolled it up like carpet and we will put it in your trailer for you,” he said. “Whether you want one square metre or 1001 square meters, just come in and see us.”
Northern Knights and BLACKCAPS pace bowler Brent Arnel loves the grass so much he is buying some for his property. “We’ve just moved into our new house and I’m going to go down and get some grass for my new lawn,” he said. “I was looking at my run up at Seddon Park but some parts will be more worn than others, so I might go for a piece of the lovely outfield. It’s unbelievable grass.”
Seddon Park holds a special place in Arnel’s heart and he said he’ll be able to look at his new lawn with fond memories. “It’s got a bit of history for me. I can look back and think of my Test cricket at the ground and the games I’ve played for the Knights.”
Once the sale of the turf is completed the ground staff will re-sow new grass. “It’s my favourite ground and I love playing there. It’s like a post card and I can just imagine it’s going to be even nicer than what is was,” Arnel concluded.
