Guptill requires thumb surgery

BLACKCAPS batsman Martin Guptill will have surgery next week on a thumb injury which will see him miss the remainder of the ANZ International Series.

The 26-year-old requires surgery on a ligament injury to his left thumb which occurred earlier in the current series against England .

Guptill missed last night’s second ANZ One Day International due to a hamstring strain that he suffered during Sunday’s first ODI victory. The hamstring injury also keeps him out of Saturday’s deciding match at Auckland ’s Eden Park .

BLACKCAPS physiotherapist Paul Close said while Guptill could continue playing in the short term with the thumb injury he needed to have surgery at some point.

“We felt it was best to get Martin right for the tour to England in May and June, so the next couple of months were seen as the best window to have the surgery.”

Hamish Rutherford has replaced Guptill in the BLACKCAPS ODI squad this week.

Meanwhile, Jeetan Patel has replaced Ish Sodhi in the New Zealand XI squad to play England in a four-day warm-up match next week. Sodhi suffered a quad strain in today’s Plunket Shield match between the Northern Knights and Central Stags in Nelson.
