Gillette Cup Finals 2006: Day One

Gillette Cup joint holders Tauranga Boys' College and Christchurch Boys' High School opened their bids for an outright win with victories on the opening day of the tournament at Palmerston North.

Kane Williamson made an unbeaten 120 not out, the fourth-highest score in finals history, as Tauranga chased down Otago BHS’ 219 for six. Hamish Rutherford top scored for Otago with 98.

In the other Pool A game, Tim Southee took six wickers for just 31 runs to help King's School complete a six-wicket win over Rathkeale College.

Brock Price put Rathkeale in a strong position with 53, but New Zealand Under-19 bowler Southee instigated a collapse.

A second-wicket stand of 77 between Angus McLean and Kai Petersen set the foundation for an easy win in the 33rd over.

Corey Anderson struck an unbeaten 103 as Christchurch BHS defeated Hamilton Boys’ High School by 79 runs in Pool B.

Anderson put on a record unbroken stand on 117 with Tyler Bleyendaal (55no), to put on 295/4.

Brad Perrett’s half-century was not enough for Hamilton, who ended on 216.

The day’s other game saw hometown school Palmerston North Boys' High School defeat St Patrick's College (Silverstream) by three wickets.

Chad Law struck 94 not out to help PNBHS to victory from a vulnerable 32 for six to chase down St Patrick’s 171 for six.
