However, when the covers were lifted it was the West Indies who took advantage of the conditions, piling on a commanding total of 207-1 at stumps.
The opening combination of Chris Gayle and Daren Ganga was an immediate success as the pair scored runs around the ground with ease.
Play was halted for a 25-minute period following the lunch break but that failed to halt the Windies' charge.
Eventually, with the score on 143, Gayle's innings came to a close when India's Munaf Patel had him bowled on 83.
The prized wicket of Gayle saw Ramnaresh Sarwan (44no) join Ganga (64no) at the crease and the pair maintained the early dominance to see out the close of play without another wicket falling.
The four-game series is level at 0-0 after the first two matches were drawn.
