Gary Stead joins Canterbury Cricket

Former BLACKCAP and current White Ferns coach, Gary Stead has been appointed to the position of High Performance Director and Wizards Head Coach at Canterbury Cricket.

Stead replaces Bob Carter who was recently appointed as Assistant Coach of the BLACKCAPS.

Lee Germon, the CEO of Canterbury Cricket said that the appointment of Stead signals an exciting advancement in the high performance area for Canterbury Cricket.

“When we scoped this role we were determined to find a top quality candidate who could not only coach our Wizards side but develop and implement a high performance system and environment for our elite athletes.

Gary brings top level coaching and playing experience, a varied background in the high performance area of our sport and an impressive playing record for Canterbury and New Zealand. He is about to complete the prestigious coach accelerator programme and is very highly regarded by both players and fellow coaches."

Gary Stead said he was "excited and proud" to be given the job, adding he was taking over a Wizards side in great shape. "I think the work Bob Carter has done with them has been superb and I hope to build on that”.

Gary Stead short bio:

  • Played five tests for New Zealand in 1999 against South Africa, India and the West Indies.
  • He scored 278 runs at an average of 34.75 with a highest score of 78.
  • Played 101 first-class matches and 103 domestic one-day matches, a total of 190 for Canterbury, mostly as an opener and many as a captain.
  • Has coached the White Ferns since July 2008 and worked with New Zealand Cricket in a high performance capacity before that.
  • Has been at the helm of the White Ferns in three World Cup finals.
