Final rematch at Basin

State Central Stags begin the defence of their State Championship title at the scene of last season’s triumph.

The Stags claimed victory over the State Wellington Firebirds at the Prime Finance Basin Reserve by 113 runs to take the crown.

Fine bowling performances in both innings by , (seven for 96 for the match) and (eight for 94 - including 6/34 in the second innings) backed up Ross Taylor’s first innings century.

This week, the teams meet again at the same venue to start their 2006/07 First-Class seasons.

Mason (pictured) recalled the match fondly, but was determined the side build on the team effort which has maintained their strong performances over a number of seasons.

The BLACKCAPS pace bowler said: “We went into that season and it had a great feel from the start. We had a bit more experience in the side, people bought into their goals, and everyone just went and did it.

“It had the feel of a good, hardworking team - a close team, and everyone wanted to work for each other.”

“I think we have talented individuals, but it’s the culture we have.

“We have been performing for the last three years, been challenging for the finals for the last three or four years - and I think people have got more experience and maturity as a unit.

“The confidence showed in the games and the environment they were in helped them.”

Central again showed their edge against the Firebirds in a pre-season warm-up match in Napier.

Mason was pivotal in a two-game at Nelson Park, taking five for 31 off 15. Taylor again scored three figures, with batting support from newcomer Greg Hay and captain .

Central Stags will pick from a 12-man squad before play commences. Greg Hay could make his first-class debut, but BLACKCAPS all-rounder Jacob Oram has not been included.

Wellington coach Anthony Stuart has his three BLACKCAPS – , and - plus in his squad.

“It's been a good pre season, we're happy about it,” he said. “But last week was a bit of a kick in the pants.

“This is a good opportunity to show that last week was a bit of an anomaly. But those guys are a good team, and I've spoken a lot over the last few days.

“But it's no good if the players don't go out and perform.”
