England managed a 238-run win over the Cricket Club of India in its opening game at Mumbai.
England scored 299 and 265 while CCI scored 251 and needed only to survive the last session of play to achieve a draw.
However, it was dismissed for 75 in 27 overs. Simon Jones, Steve Harmison, Monty Panesar and Ian Blackwell each took two wickets. Blackwell completed a good day having scored 59 in England's second innings.
Encouragingly for England, Marcus Trescothick, who had been suffering from the flu scored 88 from 128 balls.
However, Michael Vaughan (13), Andrew Flintoff (5) and Kevin Pieterson (10) all failed to make the most of their chances for batting time.
It was left to Geraint Jones to aid Trescothick in boosting England's total during a stand of 68.
Then Blackwell hit three sixes in his innings.
Simon Jones, bowling for the first time in a match situation since his ankle operation last year, broke through early for his two wickets and was backed up by the rest of the attack, with Harmison bowling only three overs when introduced as fifth change to take 2-3 while Blackwell took 2-0 from 1.2 overs.
Coach Duncan Fletcher told BBC Sport he was pleased with the way the side won.
"All areas were carried out very well. The way we won was really clinical and shows a good attitude."
"One criticism is that there were no hundreds, but there's not enough time in three-day games, the object was for all to spend decent time at the wicket," he said.
"These games are much more useful than practising in the nets, there is pressure and the intensity is upped at certain stages," he said.
