Domestic women’s teams named for Action Cricket competitions

The domestic women's teams to contest the 2010/11 Action Cricket Twenty20 and Action Cricket Cup have been named this week.

The opening round of the Action Cricket Twenty20 will be played on December 10 and the Action Cricket Cup starts December 11.

Below are some key notes on each of the teams.

 

 Auckland Hearts

The Hearts will be captained by wicketkeeper Vic Lind this season. 

Former White Fern Kelly Brown returns to the game after last playing in the domestic competition in the 2003/2004 season. Brown, a pace bowler and hard hitting batsman, is likely to be key member of the Auckland batting lineup in the Action Cricket Twenty20 matches. 

Experienced bowlers Paula Gruber and Natalie Scripps return for another season and big things will be expected from Katie Perkins, Maddie Green and Rosie Cox who toured Australia last summer as members of the NZ Emerging Players squad.

 Northern Spirit

The team has lost former White Fern Kate Pulford who has moved to Perth. Anna Wilkins has also retired this season.

ICC World T20 player of the tournament in the West Indies Nicola Browne will be the cornerstone of the Spirit’s batting and bowling.

There are a group of promising youngsters in the squad led by Natalie Dodd and Morna Nielsen, who both made their White Ferns debuts last season.

Central Hinds

The Hinds will feel the loss of two former White Fern bowlers Abby Burrows - out with injury, and Rachel Candy playing for Canterbury Magicians this year.

Irish international Eimear Richardson has been recruited - she has played 17 ODIs for Ireland.

The Hinds squad includes current White Ferns Aimee Watkins, Sara McGlashan, Rachel Priest and Kate Broadmore and promising young Napier bowler Maneka Singh who impressed in her debut last season.

The Blaze have retained the core of last seasons team – White Ferns Sophie Devine, Sian Ruck, Lucy Doolan and Liz Perry, and seasoned campaigners Amanda Cooper and Megan Wakefield are back to give the Blaze a settled look. 

Wakefield will captain the team and Devine will be the vice captain.

They welcome back promising pace bowler Lea Tahuhu from injury and Rachel Candy has joined from the Hinds to strengthen their pace attack. 

Top order bat Janet Brehaut is also back after missing last year with illness. 

White Fern Amy Satterthwaite captains the team, and along with White Fern Maria Fahey and promising opener Frankie Mackay, will be the backbone of the batting.

Otago Sparks

Katey Martin captains the team. 

Evergreen Clare Taylor, former England pace bowler will be playing another season for the Sparks. 

Sarah Tsukigawa, Suzie Bates and Martin will be the key to the batting.

The bowling stocks have improved with the return of former Spirit bowler Jenny Jackson (nee Stafford) who last played at this level in the 2002/2003 season, and wily offspinner Tanya Morrison who did not play last summer. Natasha Miles who has represented Hong Kong will play for the Sparks this season.
