Northern Districts batsman Anton Devcich only newcomer, recalls for Adam Milne and James Neesham.

Devcich named in limited overs squad for Bangladesh

Northern Districts batsman Anton Devcich is the only newcomer in the BLACKCAPS limited overs squad to tour Bangladesh next month.

The 27-year-old lefthander is in India with the New Zealand A side where he scored 115 against India A in a four day match earlier this month, as well as 48 and 66 in the one dayers.

Tom Latham - Canterbury Wizards

New General Manager National Selection Bruce Edgar says Devcich’s current form in India is a continuation of his recent run of good performances in limited overs cricket.

“Anton showed very good signs against England last season for New Zealand A and has transitioned from a middle order batsman to an aggressive top order player.  He is also an outstanding fielder with the ability to contribute as a left arm spin bowling option which will be useful in the sub-continent.”

Edgar says the squad for three ODIs and a Twenty20 in Bangladesh also sees the return of Central Districts pace bowler Adam Milne who last played for the BLACKCAPS in November 2012 in Sri Lanka.

“Adam returns to the team after a number of injury concerns and he offers the squad genuine pace. We’ve been impressed with his rhythm and pace on the New Zealand A tour of India.”

Batsman Martin Guptill and bowler Daniel Vettori were not considered for the tour due to injury, while Tim Southee is expected to be fully fit for the limited overs matches after not being named in the Test squad following ankle surgery.

BLACKCAPS Head Coach Mike Hesson says the injury to Guptill in particular opens the door for other batsmen.

“Martin was the standout batsman in the recent one day series victory over England so his absence provides an opportunity for other batsmen to shine.”

Hesson says that one of those putting his hand up in the allrounder space is James Neesham, who overnight scored 104 not out off 40 balls for the Otago Volts against a Punjab XI in a Champions League warm-up game.

James Neesham - showing great form for NZA and Otago.

“James is another left-handed batsman who is a powerful striker of the ball at any stage of the innings and like Anton and Adam, he’s in good form in India.”

The ODI and Twenty20 squad leaves on 24 October and will join the Test players in Dhaka. The BLACKCAPS team to continue on to Sri Lanka will be named at a later stage, giving the selectors the chance to consider more of the New Zealand A players’ form.
