DAYS 4 - 6: National U19 Men's Tournament

Round 5:

Tournament leader Canterbury lost their first match of the competition today in a stunning last-ball defeat by Central Districts. The day's play took place at Lincoln in Australian like weather with temperatures reaching 35 degrees as both Wellington and Auckland also claimed victories to consolidate their positions on the points table.

Central Districts vs Canterbury

Central Districts; 230/7 (Dean Robinson 51, Andy Dodd 51, Ethan Bolstad 69*, Matt Farrant 3-37) beat Canterbury; 229/9 (Bill Walsh 57, Liam Bartholomeusz 39, Andy Dodd 3-41) by 1 run

CD won the toss and batted first in their match against Canterbury. Opener Dean Robinson scored 51 off 71 balls, Andy Dodd made 51 off 80 balls and Ethan Bolstad top scored with 69 not out off 58 balls incusing 5 x 4’s and 3 x 6’s. At the end of 50 overs CD had reached 230/7. In an exciting last ball thriller Canterbury needed 14 off the last over. Number 11 Tim Johnson hit a 6 off the first ball and got to the position of needing 3 off the last ball. They only managed a single and lost by 1 run. Earlier in the innings Bill Walsh scored 57 off 105 balls and there were useful middle order contributions from Bartholomeusz, Matt Laffey, Logan Van Beek and Josh Reeves. Left arm spinner Andy Dodd took 3/41 off his 10 overs. Declan McKeefry took 2/21.

Otago vs Wellington

Otago; 144 (Jesse Simpson 51, James Fuller 33, Ili Tugaga 3-17, Harry Boam 3-21) lost to Wellington; 145/2 (Jordan Hindley 59*, Harry Boam 51*) by 8 wickets

Otago's Michael Bracewell was out first ball in the match between Otago and Wellington on Lincoln No. 3. Jesse Simpson top scored for his team with 51 off 98 balls. James Fuller added to the total and scored 33 off 60 balls at number 7. Otago was all out for 144 in 44 overs. Ili Tugaga took 3/17 off 7 overs and Harry Boam took 3/21 off 8 overs. In reply Wellington cruised to victory in 32.3 overs with unbeaten half centuries to Jordan Hindley and Harry Boam.

Auckland vs Northern Districts

Auckland; 249 (Josh Tasman-Jones 72, Ashwyn Herwels 3-54) beat Northern Districts; 186 (Steve Martin 94, Brad Schmulian 4-25) by 63 runs

Auckland batted first in the match against their neighbours ND and put on 60 for the first wicket. Josh Tasman-Jones top scored with 72 off 121 balls. There were useful contributions from Jonathon Bassett-Graham, Kirk Bunting and Jimmy Neesham. For Northern, Ashwyn Herwels took 3/54 off 10 overs and Andrew Mathieson, Anurag Verma and Jono Hickey each took two wickets. Chasing 250 to win ND were led by 94 off 107 balls from opener Steve Martin but they lost wickets regularly and Auckland bowled them out in 43.4 overs for 186. Auckland's Brad Schmulian took 4/25 off 9.4 overs and James Coughlan took 2/35 off 10 overs.

Round 4:

Canterbury continued their superb form with a 4 wicket win over Otago today. Ben Smith from Central Districts high scored in round four with 96 not out helping secure his team a win over Northern Districts. Second-placed Auckland were upset by Wellington.

Otago vs Canterbury

Otago; 176 (Nick Eathorne 65, Matt McEwan 4-19) lost to Canterbury; 177/6 (Matt Laffey 56*, Bill Walsh 33, Liam Bartholomeusz 39) by 4 wickets

At the BSO Canterbury won the toss and chose to field. Michael Bracewell and Nick Eathorne put on 70 runs in 64 balls for the first wicket before Otago began to lose wickets regularly. Eathorne top scored with 65 off 75 balls including 9 x 4 ‘s and 1 x 6. They were all out for 176 in 43 overs. Matt McEwan was the most successful of the Canterbury bowlers with 4/19 off 6 overs. Otago struck first ball with Tom Latham out caught behind but Matt Laffey with 56 not out in 78 balls, Liam Bartholomeusz with 39 and Bill Walsh with 33 helped Canterbury reach the target in 42.3 overs. Otago's pace bowler James Fuller took 2/37 in 9.3 overs.

Wellington vs Auckland

Wellington; 208 (Harry Boam 66, Chamika Gajanayaki 52, Alex MacDuff 4-25, James Coughlan 3-49) beat Auckland; 145 (Alex MacDuff 42, Ili Tugaga 4-26, Harry Boam 3-10) by 63 runs

On Lincoln No. 3 Auckland won the toss and asked Wellington to bat first. Harry Bam top scored with 66 off 89 balls and Chamika Gajanayaki scored 52 off 75 balls to help Wellington reach 208 before they were all out in 46.5 overs. James Coughlan took 3/49 off 10 overs. In reply Auckland never got started. They lost wickets regularly and were 58/7 at one stage. Only Alex MacDuff with 42 runs offered any resistance. Ili Tugaga took an amazing 4/26 off 8 overs and Harry Boam 3/10 off 6.3 overs.

Central Districts vs Northern Districts

Central Districts; 255/6 (B.J Barnett 63, Ben Smith 96*, Ethan Bolstad 31) beat Northern Districts; 224 (Steve Martin 48, Ashwyn Herwels 64, Anurag Verma 41, Declan McKeefry 3-22) by 31 runs

On Lincoln Green CD scored 255/6 off their 50 overs. Ben Smith top scored with 96 not out in 119 balls including 11 x 4’s batting at number three. He shared in useful partnerships with B.J Barnett who scored 63 and Ethan Bolstad who scored 31. Ashwyn Herwals and Jono Hickey each took two wickets. In reply ND batted aggressively but lost wickets just as partnerships were getting established. Number three Ashwyn Herwels top scored with 64 off 97 balls and Anurag Verma hit 41 off 31 balls. Declan McKeefry took 3/22 off 3.3 overs and ND fell 31 runs short.

Round 3:

Canterbury continued its dominant form when the one day matches of the national Under 19 tournament started at Lincoln University today. Canterbury recorded a dominant win against Northern Districts to sit astride the points table, nine points clear of second-placed Auckland who had a strong win against Otago. Wellington played out a close-fought victory over Central Districts.

Otago won the toss and batted in their match against Auckland at the BSO. Auckland pace bowler Lachie Ferguson took 5 wickets to finish with 5/ 31 off 7 overs. Keeper/batsman Michael Bracewell top scored with 46 and Geordie Scott fell short of his 50 with 44. Otago was dismissed in 49.1 overs for 198. In reply Auckland reached the target in 44 overs with Kirk Bunting batting at number 3 top scoring with 74 off 101 runs including 9 x 4’s. Left arm pace bowler Blair Soper and left arm spinner Nick Beard both took two wickets each.

Central Districts vs Wellington

Central Districts 173 (B.J Barnett 49, Ili Tugaga 2/29, Harry Boam 2/38, Taylor Pentecost 2/25, Thomas Pere 2/26) lost to Wellington 174/7 (Michael Pollard 76, Andy Dodd 3/25) by 3 wickets

Central won the toss on Lincoln No 3 and batted first. They were all out for 173 in 46.4 overs with B.J Barnett unfortunately falling one short of his half century on 49. In reply Michael Pollard led Wellington’s run chase with 76 off 120 balls including 6 x 4’s and 2 x 6’s. He was supported by Fraser Colson who scored 23. They lost wickets towards the end thanks to Andy Dodd who took 3 wickets but reached the target in 48.2 overs.

Canterbury vs Northern Districts

Canterbury 252/9 (Matt Laffey 72, Logan Van Beek 49) beat Northern Districts 123 (Ashwyn Herwels 29*, Matt Farrant 2/17, Logan Van Beek 2/28, Michael Holstein 2/21, Ben Bellamy 2/17) by 129 runs

At Lincoln Green, Canterbury batted first and scored 252/9 with Matt Laffey top scoring with 72 off 101 balls including 6 x 4’s and 3 x 6’s. He put on 123 runs for the 5th wicket with Logan Van Beek who also got 49. Des Kruger batting at number 3 scored 32. In reply ND struggled and was dismissed for 123 in 36 overs. Matt Farrant, Logan Van Beek, Michael Holstein and Ben Bellamy all took 2 wickets each to set up a comprehensive win.
