Day three - 4 January 2009

Central Districts vs Auckland

Central Districts; 292/6 dec. and 186 (Andy Dodd 47, Ethan Bolstad 46, Brad Schmulian 3-17) beat Auckland; 253 and 145/6 (B.J Barnett 4-45) on the first innings

On the Bert Sutcliffe Oval CD got first innings points bowling Auckland out for 253 which gave them a lead of 39 runs. In their second innings CD made 186 with Andy Dodd (47) and Ethan Bolstad (46) just falling short of their 50's. Brad Schmulian had excellent figures of 3-17. Which left Auckland the difficult task of scoring 225 off 19 overs to win the match. Auckland started aggressively wth some big hitting from Jimmy Neesham and Kirk Bunting. When stumps were drawn Auckland was only 145/6 thanks to the great bowling of B.J Barnett with 4 wickets for 45 runs.

Otago vs Northern Districts

Otago; 176 and 229/8 (Scott Paulin 49, George Spittle 100, Tamati Clarke 4/56) beat Northern Districts; 167 and 174 (Bharat Popli 44, Anurag Verma 51, Nick Beard 5/37, Blair Soper 3/38) by 64 runs

Otago dismissed ND for 165 to gain first innings points and then in their second innings they declared at 229/8 with George Spittle scoring a century. He was bowled by Tamati Clarke for 100 scored off 104 balls. This left ND 239 to win in 56 overs. ND started positively but Otago took wickets regularly and ND was all out with 17 balls remaining, Anurag Verma's 51 and Bharat Popli's 44 just wasn't enough to gain a win for ND. Left arm spinner Nick Beard took 5/37 in 21.1 overs to give him 10 wickets in the match.

Canterbury vs Wellington

Canterbury; 395/6 dec. beat Wellington; 198 and 170 (Vinnie Ward 40, Tom Blundell 60, Matt Farrant 3/16, Logan Van Beek 3/42) by an innings and 27 runs

Canterbury bowled Wellington out for 198 on Lincoln Green and then enforced the follow on and had them in dire trouble at 3 / 4 before Vinnie Read and Tom Blundell came together and put on 77 for the 5th wicket. Pace bowlers Matt Farrant and Logan Van Beek did the damage taking 3 wickets each and Wellington was all out for 170 in 59.1 overs to give Canterbury an outright win.

Day two - 3 January 2009

Rain finished play at 3.15pm in all three matches on day 2 of the National Under 19 tournament at Lincoln University.Scores from day 2 of round 2 at Lincoln University:

After carrying on from yesterday Auckland soon lost wicket after wicket and at one point were a miserable 93/6, with Declan McKeefry on excellent figures for CD with 3 wickets for 31 runs. Craig Cachopa and Brad Schmulian came to the rescue though and held together for a 116 run patnership leaving Auckland on 209/6 when the weather turned. Craig is unbeaten on 72 and Brad unbeaten on 39.

After bowling out Otago for a relatively low score ND were in with a great chance but they just could not stay in today. ND lost wickets regularly and still had 23 runs to get with only 2 wickets left when the weather packed in. Left arm spinner Nick Beard and pace bowler Blair Soper both took 3 wickets for Otago helping reduce ND reach 177.

After a huge score yesterday Canterbury were keen to bowl Wellington out for a low total. Captain Matt Farrant led the charge with 3 wickets for just 21 runs. Michael Pollard batted well for Wellington but was soon out for 54 helping Wellington reach a score of 198/9 at days end with number 9 batsmen Lli Tugaga unbeaten on 31.

Play got underway on time in two of the three matches on the last day of Round 2 at the National Under 19 tournament at Lincoln University with the match on the Bert Sutcliffe Oval being delayed 10 minutes due to some dampness in the outfield after heavy rain yesterday afternoon.

Day one - 2 January 2009:

On the opening day of tournament play three centuries were scored. Canterbury's Tom Latham continued a rich vein of form in the tournament with a huge 148 off 220 balls against Wellington. His innings included 24 fours and together with Liam Bartholomeusz he put on 213 for the third wicket. Bartholomeusz ended with 108 off 170, including 18 fours.

CD opener Dean Robinson brought up 134 not out in 301 balls v Auckland on the Bert Sutcliffe Oval. He opened the innings and was still batting when the declaration came.

CD were first to bat in their match against Auckland today and they started with enthusiasm.Dean Robinson opened the innings for CD and was still unbeaten on 134 when his side declared. He along with Declan McKeefry, who scored a well played 62, helped CD reach a big total of 292 for 6. Auckland's Alex MacDuff had CD's batsmen mesmerised with amazing figures of 4 for 39. After CD had declared Auckland were at the crease and at the end of the day were on 21 runs without the loss of a wicket.

Otago wore the pads first today in their game against ND but fell short of their goal only reaching 176 before losing their last wicket. Nick Beard held fast but he too soon lost his wicket on 53. Jono Hickey held Otago back with 3 wickets for 66 runs. At the end of the first day ND were wicketless for 31 runs.

Canterbury batted first in their match against Wellington today and got off to a flyer. Tom Latham scored a magnificent 148 and held a 3rd wicket stand for 213 with Liam Bartholomeusz (108) to get Canterbury to a huge 395 for just 6 wickets. Matt Laffey succeded in scoring his 50 and is unbeaten on 61. Wellington did not get a bat today.

Nearest neighbour

The tournament commenced with round two of the annual competition: with the teams having met each other in "nearest neighbour" first round matches prior to Christmas.
