England allrounder Jamie Dalrymple has answered his nation's cry for help after Ashes legend Andrew Flintoff was forced out of the side due to a recurring ankle injury.
Flintoff, who has been out of the international arena for over a month following an ankle injury, was expected to return for England in the upcoming second Test against Pakistan at Old Trafford.
However, further complications to his ankle injury have seen the allrounder and stand-in captain's chances of playing disappear.
Off-spinner Dalrymple, who was England's second-highest scorer during the recent one-day international series against Sri Lanka, has been included in Flintoff's place for the second Test.
Andrew Strauss, meanwhile, has been confirmed as the captain of the team for the rest of the series.
Further adding to the injury woes of the England team is the fact that paceman Liam Plunkett is also likely to miss the Test after injuring his side.
Sajid Mahmood is expected to shoulder most of the bowling responsibility along with Gloucestershire seamer Jon Lewis.
Speaking about Plunkett's injury, chairman of selectors David Graveney said it would be unlikely that he would play in the second Test.
"Our medical staff haven't seen him but side injuries for bowlers are a bit of a 'no-no' at the best of times," he said.
Graveney also highlighted Dalrymple as a fitting replacement for the injured Flintoff.
"Jamie Dalrymple performed impressively during the NatWest Series," he said.
"His inclusion will give the captain and coach another option when they decide on the starting line-up for this Test match."
