Captain Cumming scoops top awards for Otago

The WHK Group Otago Cricketer of the Year Awards were held at the University Oval on Friday April 3.

The awards were a fitting end to what has been a very sucessful season for Otago Cricket. The night was a chance to celebrate the State Otago Volts win in the State Twenty20. Six members of the Volts (B McCullum, N Broom, A Redmond, I Butler, C Cumming, N McCullum) being selected for the BLACKCAPS during the 2008/09 international season and three members of the State Otago Sparks (S Bates, S Tsukigawa, K Martin) being selected in the Whiteferns World Cup Squad.

Our age group players also had a season to remember with James Fuller, Nick Beard & Michael Bracewell representing New Zealand Under 19 and Michael Bracewell being selected as New Zealands Young Cricketer to Lords.

Craig Cumming took home the Cricketer of the Year Award for his fantastic season where he scored 784 runs at 65.33 in the State Championship, 421 runs at 70.16 in the State Shield and 121 runs at 40.33 in the State Twenty20. Peter Cameron was awarded with the Contribution to Cricket Award for his outstanding service to North Otago & Otago Cricket. The Outstanding Individual Performance Award went to Aaron Redmond for his unbeaten match winning State Twenty20 century against Central Districts. State Otago Sparks Cricketer of the Year went to Sparks captain and New Zealand Whiteferns player Sarah Tsukigawa. Coach of the year was awarded to stand out coach Mike Hesson for his outstanding leadership of the State Otago Volts.
