Canterbury win Women's Development Tournament title

Canterbury have won the National Women's Development Tournament at Lincoln University with a 43-run win in the final at Lincoln’s Bert Sutcliffe Oval.

Leigh Martin’s 91 proved decisive for the Canterbury after they won the toss and batted. 

Top qualifier Auckland struck early, removing both openers to have them 11/2 but an entertaining partnership of 105 followed between Martin and Lizzie Rae (44). 

A flurry of wickets in the last five overs meant they were all out for 20 in the 49th over.

Katie Perkins’ 61 was the leading score in reply, but when she was run out with the score at 133, the rate slowed and Auckland lost wickets regularly. 

Frankie Mackay and Lea Tahuhu both took two wickets to give Canterbury victory.

Wellington defeated Northern Districts by 123 runs on Lincoln’s No. 3 Oval.

Wellington won the toss and batted, with opener Sarah Bradbury continuing her fine form with 68 off 110 balls.

Sarah Sims made 65 off 102 balls, putting on 145 for the second wicket as Wellington progressed to 237/8 at the end of 50 overs.

Holly Huddleston was the most successful of the ND bowlers with 3/33 off her 10.

Kirbie Samkin top scored with a run-a-ball 51, Renee Moffitt rakinf 2/26 off 10 overs and Natasha Narasy took 3/13 off just 13 balls, dismissing ND for 114 in the 28th over.

ND’s Natalie Dodd took the Trish McKelvey Trophy for the best player at the tournament.

On Lincoln Green in the match between Otago and CD for 5th and 6th, Otago won the toss and batted but was in early trouble at 10/2 and never really recovered.  Sarah Mollison top scored with 32 but Otago was all out for 120 in the 40th over.  Esther Lanser took 3/17 and Krystina Frederic, Penny Wiggins and Olivia Gregory each took two wickets.  In reply

CD cruised to victory in 31 overs of their fifth/sixth-place play-off against Otago.

Pennyrose Wiggins (43 not out) and Kelly Rangi (36not out) put on an unbroken stand of 71 in a nine-wicket win.
