Broadmore, Van Wyk honoured by Central Districts

Kruger van Wyk and Kate Broadmore have been named the Central Districts Players of the Year for the 2013-14 season.

Broadmore’s accolade was earned through her all-round performances and impact as a senior player in a very young Central Hinds women’s team.

The 22 year old scored 273 runs in the One-Day competition at an average of 34.12 with her 104 not against the Canterbury Magicians standing out. Her Twenty20 batting was even more impressive, averaging a whopping 51. She also returned seven wickets with the ball for the Hinds in her thirteen matches played.

Mike Shrimpton, the Hinds coach, commented; “This award is fully deserved by Kate for her consistent efforts in all disciplines and in all forms of the game. Her bowling, batting and fielding had few equals in the respective competitions this season”

Kruger van Wyk stood out this season for the Devon Hotel Central Stags and thoroughly deserved to win the Life Members salver for the Men’s Player of the Year. In a year with few successes for the Devon Hotel Central Stags, the 34 year old Van Wyk performed consistently throughout the season with the bat and gloves.

The Plunket Shield competition in particular saw van Wyk statistically match some of the best seasons ever by a wicket-keeper/batsman for Central Districts. He scored 725 runs at an average of 55.77 and secured 35 dismissals with the gloves, only one short of Bevan Griggs’ all time record.

With Van Wyk’s HRV Twenty20 and Ford Trophy matches he scored collectively over 1000 runs and took 48 dismissals for the 2013-14 season.

Devon Hotel Central Stags Coach Heinrich Malan highlighted van Wyk’s total contribution to the team environment as the reason for his success.

“Kruger’s contribution hasn’t just been about runs and dismissals, even though he topped both areas for the team.  It is his other attributes, such as his ability to lead from the front, his attitude and commitment to preparation and training that makes him stand out.  He has had a fantastic season in what was a very trying one for the team and thoroughly deserves this recognition” Malan said.
