Blaze shock Sparks

Megan Wakefield scored 50 as State Wellington Blaze scored their first win of the State League season at Dunedin’s University Oval.

The Blaze, finalists in 2007, went winless before a surprise 21-run victory over State Otago Sparks, still in contention for a final place.

Wakefield’s knock helped Wellington to 176 for six from their 50 overs after deciding to bat first.

Sparks captain Sarah Tsukigawa produced an impressive 80 in her side’s reply, but Wellington removed the home team for 155 with 10 balls to spare.

Otago, in third place with two games to play, can still progress to the final, but will need to defeat State Canterbury Magicians at least once in their final round matches in Invercargill.
