Coach John Bracewell said that the selectors had decided to select a squad of only 14 (compared with 15) as they have the opportunity to add to the squad throughout the series.

“Because of the looming world cup, we are managing the selection process for this tour differently to other tours. The selectors have reserved the right to interchange the squad at any time during the tour.

“There are several key players who are gradually returning to the game after injury. We did not want them to enter into a race for fitness to make this tour and thereby return too early to the international game, thus affecting our chances in the World Cup. They will return when ready, even if it is part way through the tour.

“This policy also allows for other players to continue to press their claims for inclusion on the tour.”
