The BLACKCAPS literally blew into Wellington a week ago on a flight that terrified many of the players. A week later they’ll fly out with the wind fully in their sails after a convincing second Test victory.
Speaking to media on the morning after the win over the West Indies by an innings and 73 runs, BLACKCAPS Head Coach Mike Hesson says winning one so convincingly was pretty pleasing.
“And it’s not a win in isolation … it’s something we’ve built up over a period of time. We know we haven’t nailed it yet but it’s another step forward for this team.”
Hesson identified the key elements of the victory as the number of partnerships with the bat, a wagging tail and then a bowling effort that made the most of the overhead conditions.
“To get over 400 on a surface that kept offering something was hugely important.”
He offered a good insight into what makes man of the match Trent Boult such a demon with the ball.

“The way he presents the seam is as good as there is going around. He’s got the ability to take top order wickets because he swings the ball late ... and he’s extremely fit so he can bowl three or four hard spells. He’s an exciting prospect.”
Hesson also praised the calmness of Ross Taylor after consecutive Test centuries.
“He’s incredibly calm at the crease. The tempo he stayed at for the whole innings [in Dunedin] was a master class and then to back it up in completely different conditions here. He’s playing superbly … and long may it continue.”
Many of the players now return home for a few days rest before they gather in Hamilton on Tuesday. Hesson says there are a few niggly injuries in the squad but he expects to name the same 13 for the third ANZ Test starting on Thursday.
The West Indies suggest they may play two spinners in Hamilton and Hesson says the BLACKCAPS will prepare for all eventualities.
“We prepared for Narine [spinner Sunil Narine] to play the first Test so our preparations won’t change and we’ll expect that he plays. Hamilton often looks green but doesn’t do as much as you think.”
