BLACKCAPS aim to level series

The BLACKCAPS have the chance to level the series when the second Test against South Africa commences in Cape Town.

Hamish Marshall will sit out the game at Sahara Park after receiving rib injuries and resulting breathing difficulties during the second innings of the defeat at Centurion.

The State Northern Knight will relinquish his opening position, with Michael Papps likely to step in alongside State Canterbury Wizards colleague Peter Fulton.

"It's a loss for us but it's also an opportunity for one of our other batsmen to perform on what looks like a good surface," coach John Bracewell said.

"Hamish won't be available for the match, his ribs just haven't improved enough."

Shane Bond has returned home after failing to recover from the knee injury which kept him out of the first Test.

The pace bowler will also miss out on his winter move to English county Gloucestershire after being prescribed a six-week break from cricket.

Michael Mason arrived in Cape Town last week as cover and will now be considered to start at Newlands.

Nathan Astle is likely to play after his knee injury cleared, but James Franklin faced another test on his before the match.

The hosts have dropped Herschelle Gibbs and Garnett Kruger, with Hashim Amla likely to replace the batsman.

Amla, 23, scored 893 runs at 55.81 for his SuperSport Trophy side Nashua Dolphins. He will bat at number three, with Boeta Dippenaar moving to opener to partner captain Graeme Smith.

All-rounder Andrew Hall and pace bowler Andre Nel will look to challenge youngster Dale Steyn for a place in the Proteas’ team, despite the tyro’s impressive display in Centurion.

The South Africa v BLACKCAPS second Test begins at Sahara Park, Newlands at 8pm NZT (10am local time).
