The Proteas gave themselves 15 overs to bowl at Australia on day two and in an inspired session of bowling managed to claim the wickets of Matthew Hayden (4), Justin Langer (25) - both bowled by Langeveldt - and Brad Hodge (6) to be in control of the match.
South Africa resumed the day at 3-230 and dominated the morning session, with Jacques Kallis bringing up his 23rd Test century and Ashwell Prince following suit soon after with his third Test ton.
Andrew Symonds claimed the breakthrough wicket of Kallis just before lunch, having him caught by Glenn McGrath at fine leg for 111, ending a 222-run fourth-wicket stand.
Both Prince and Jacques Rudolph looked comfortable against the Australian attack after lunch, before Shane Warne had Prince trapped in front without offering a shot for a majestic 119.
Australia claimed the scalp of Mark Boucher with the score on 355, and snared Rudolph, caught behind off McGrath for 38.
Shaun Pollock and debutant Johan Botha then set about powering the South Africans towards the 450-run mark, before Brett Lee claimed Pollock for 46 with the score on 433.
Andre Nel then blasted 12 from eight deliveries but was out when he skied Warne to Hodge.
Langeveldt (1 not out) joined Botha (20 not out) at the crease and were there when captain Graeme Smith declared.
The Australian opening pair of Langer and Hayden started the run chase well, scoring 22 runs in the first three overs.
But South Africa got the breakthrough they were searching for when Langeveldt swung a ball in to Hayden, who mistimed his stroke and was bowled for four.
Langeveldt's next over was also action packed, with Langer hitting him for consecutive boundaries through cover.
However, Langeveldt had the last laugh when Langer mistimed a pull shot, dragging the ball back on to his stumps to be dismissed for 25.
In the very last over of the day, Nel had Hodge caught at bat pad for six, leaving the Proteas well on top entering day three.
