Brett Lee was the late batting hero with an unbeaten 24, with four fours, off 46 balls to complement his first-innings score of 64 and bowling figures of 7-121 off 42.3 overs - and win the man-of-the-match award.
Lee punched the air triumphantly after slashing Shaun Pollock to the cover boundary to lift Australia's total to 8-294 off 91.4 overs for a 5-0 win in the six Tests against South Africa this season.
Lee was supported at the end by fellow fast bowlers Stuart Clark (10) and Michael Kasprowicz (7 n.o.) after Damien Martyn had completed a superb century.
Clark won the man-of-the-series award for his memorable debut series - 20 wickets at the miserly average of 15.84 off 118 overs.
The second new ball was only 1.3 overs away when Australia resumed at 6-248 (Martyn on 93, Lee on nine) - with a victory target of 292 - and it was taken immediately it was due after 80 overs, with Australia 6-250.
Pollock gained the breakthrough South Africa so desperately wanted when he pinned Martyn lbw with the last delivery of his second over with the new ball - the 84th over of the innings - to leave Australia 7-258, still trailing by 34.
Martyn's heroic 101, with 13 fours, off 208 balls, was his 13th century in 64 Tests - and his fourth against South Africa.
His previous three against the Proteas were scored in the 2001-02 season - 124no in Adelaide, 117 in Sydney and 133 in Johannesburg.
Clark hit two fours off Makhaya Ntini in the 89th over before trying to hook a third and top-edging a catch to wicketkeeper Mark Boucher in front of the slips cordon, and Australia still required 17 to win.
Lee and Kasprowicz then played with remarkable aplomb in their do-or-die stand, while knowing that concussed opener Justin Langer was padded up to bat if required.
Ntini finished with the magnificent match figures of 10-178 of 44.5 overs - his third 10-wicket haul in 64 Tests.
